Bulletin of the ISPAN, No. 2: One Year After the Vallière Market Fire
Summary: One year after the fire of 29-30 May 2008 destroyed the north hall of the Vallière market in Port-au-Prince, also known as the Marché-en-Fer or Marché Hyppolite. That hall held the country's largest market for Vodou ritual objects.
Key Findings
- The bulletin reviews the 29 to 30 May 2008 fire that completely destroyed the north hall of Port-au-Prince's Valliere market, also known as the Iron Market or Hyppolite market.
- The market building was inaugurated on 22 November 1891 after one year of assembly works and is described as the largest surviving metal market of its kind in the region.
- The article says the restoration would require a detailed inventory of metal pieces, safe storage, recasting of unrecoverable damaged pieces, and reassembly based on archives or a detailed survey of the south hall.
- The market was shown on the back of the 1000-gourde commemorative note issued in 1999 for the 250th anniversary of Port-au-Prince.
- ISPAN technicians measured a loss of plumb of about 54 cm on the support wall of the monumental stairway at Sans-Souci Palace and prepared an emergency estimate of 1,846,627.86 gourdes.
