Cumulative Impact Assessment for Regional Development in the Cap-Haïtien to Ouanaminthe Urban Corridor
- Six Valued Environmental Systems identified as critical for sustainable development: estuarine/coastal/marine systems, water resources, highland watersheds, air quality, soils/agriculture, and cultural areas.
- Population projected to grow significantly by 2030 under both baseline and high growth scenarios, requiring substantial infrastructure investments.
- Natural hazards pose significant risks including earthquakes, floods, droughts, and landslides, with climate change expected to exacerbate these risks.
- Major resource demands identified for transportation, water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and energy infrastructure.
- Cumulative impacts on environmental systems require integrated management approaches and comprehensive monitoring programs.
This cumulative impact assessment examines the potential environmental and socio-economic effects of regional development in the Cap-Haïtien to Ouanaminthe corridor in northern Haiti. The study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team and focuses on six Valued Environmental Systems (VES) including estuarine/coastal/marine systems, water resources, highland watersheds, air quality, soils and agricultural areas, and culturally valuable areas.
The assessment analyzes current demographic characteristics and projects population growth scenarios through 2030, examining both baseline and high growth scenarios. It evaluates natural hazards including earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, and climate change impacts, while assessing land development suitability across the region.
The study examines sectoral resource demands including transportation infrastructure, water supply, sanitation and wastewater management, solid waste generation, and energy consumption. It identifies cumulative impacts on each valued environmental system and provides detailed management strategies and monitoring indicators.
The report concludes with proposed management structures and comprehensive strategies for each environmental system, disaster mitigation measures, and economic policies to promote sustainable implementation of development projects in the corridor.
