Livestock Value Chains: Cattle, Goats, Rabbits, Pigs, Poultry and Bees
- Estimates the national pig herd at about 1,000,000 animals, with more than 200,000 head in the Ouest department and more than 100,000 in the Artibonite.
- Finds pig rearing unprofitable once feed is costed, because wheat bran is very expensive, and explains why it continues anyway: the farmer cannot calculate total costs and sees a relatively large income at the moment of sale.
- Quantifies the return precisely: an adult female pig returns 1,170 gourdes to its owner over a year, equivalent to 16 days of the 75-gourde daily minimum wage.
- Records a considerable price gap between market channels, with a pound of pork at 70 gourdes in public markets against 90 gourdes in supermarkets.
- Costs the retailer's side of the chain, 100 gourdes on average to the slaughterer, 10 gourdes to the DGI controller and 100 gourdes of equipment depreciation for knives and tables, for 210 gourdes of charges beyond the purchase of the animal.
- Records chicken rearing as practised by about 95 percent of the country's 800,000 peasant family farms (UNDP/FAO, 1996), which makes poultry the most widely held livestock asset in the country.
- Covers cattle, goats, rabbits, pigs, poultry and bees in one volume, with actor identification, relations between actors, volumes, prices and price formation for each.
Prepared by consultant Michel Chancy for MARNDR's Direction Générale Adjointe à l'Organization de la Production et des Marchés Agricoles and the IDB's Regional Operations Department II, Environmental and Natural Resources Management Division, under technical cooperation HA-T1008 / ATN-FC-9052, and dated September 2005. It is the livestock component of the wider study identifying potential niches in Haitian rural value chains, and treats six groups: cattle, goats, rabbits, pigs, poultry and bees. It opens on the herbivores - cattle, goats and sheep - by identifying and locating the different categories of actor, which is the analytical move the whole study repeats chain by chain. It is the companion volume to the Volume 2 synthesis also held here, and at nearly 300,000 characters is among the most detailed livestock sector descriptions in the collection.
