Environmental and Social Impact Identification and Mitigation Sheet: Digé Drinking-Water Network (Nord-Ouest, about 20 km from Jean-Rabel), May 2018
- Works: repair of the intake box, a 30 m3 reservoir, fencing of the intake (50 m) and the reservoir, leak repair, six 1-inch valves at kiosk connections and two air valves.
- Serves about 5,000 people; category B project; excessive sedimentation at the intake.
- World Bank non-objection given October 23, 2018.
- Prepared under the EPARD rural water and sanitation program, financed by the World Bank.
- Screened under OP 4.01 and Haiti's 2005 framework environmental decree.
The sheet identifies the environmental and social impacts of works on the Digé rural drinking-water system (SAEP) in the Nord-Ouest and proposes mitigation measures, as the World Bank's operational policy on environmental assessment (OP 4.01) and Haiti's 2005 framework environmental decree require. It sits in DINEPA's EPARD safeguards set, one sheet for each rural system in the program.
The works are repair of the intake box, a 30 m3 reservoir, fencing of the intake (50 m) and the reservoir, leak repair, six 1-inch valves at kiosk connections and two air valves. The system, built in 1976 and rehabilitated in 1988, serves about 5,000 people and was damaged by Hurricane Matthew; cholera cases at the health center were tied to poor water. The project is category B, and the main negative impact is excessive sedimentation at the intake. The environmental budget is US$4,000. The World Bank specialists gave their non-objection on October 23, 2018.
