Diagnosis of Production Systems in the Baptiste-Savanette Area
- The 2006-2007 internship thesis diagnoses production systems in the Baptiste-Savanette area, a coffee-growing zone in Haiti's Central Plateau.
- The study analyzes how coffee producers' strategies vary with farmed area, land tenure, perennial crops, livestock and access to other work.
- Methods include literature review, semi-structured interviews with 40 to 60 landowners, reconstruction of production-system history and typology-based economic modeling.
- The report identifies at least six farmer types and shows that all systems produce some net added value per worker, but full coffee monoculture is economically unprofitable.
- Small farm categories I and II cannot live from agriculture alone, pushing many workers toward nearby work and migration to the Dominican Republic.
- The conclusion says technical support and cooperative creation have improved participation in coffee management, but producers still need better links with traders to secure production, strengthen agrarian structures and reduce rural outmigration.
This placement dissertation, submitted for a masters in Sciences, Technology and Health specializing in bioresources in tropical and Mediterranean regions, diagnoses the production systems of the Baptiste-Savanette area. It opens by setting out the methodological distinction it works from: an agrarian diagnosis is theoretically studied at the scale of a small region and privileges the relations between different producers and existing organizations, whereas the study of production systems operates at the scale of individual farms and must arrive at the strategies adopted by different categories of producer. It is the farm-level counterpart to the Pasquetti agrarian diagnosis of the same zone, and the corpus holds the Savanette communal development plan alongside both.
