WFP VAM Market Monitoring, April to May 2026: Haiti

The World Food Programme's Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping unit publishes this market monitoring bulletin for Haiti. This edition covers April and May 2026.

The cost of the national food basket rose 4 percent over the two months, from 21,541 to 22,320 gourdes. The movement was uneven across departments: the North-East rose 18 percent and the South-East 7 percent, both on the Dominican border where cross-border trade and the neighbouring market transmit price pressure, while the Centre fell 8 percent and the North 5 percent. Communes targeted by OCHA pooled funds recorded a basket 1 percent below the national figure in April and 2 percent below in May, which the bulletin reads as possible evidence of humanitarian assistance cushioning inflationary pressure.

Among individual commodities, maize rose 8 percent and imported or processed goods rose faster still, spaghetti by 6 percent and sardines by 9 percent nationally and 87 percent in the South, while other staples stayed broadly stable.

On availability, traders reported satisfactory supply of wheat flour, rice, maize, sugar, vegetable oil and black beans. Red beans were the exception: 52 percent of traders reported them absent or in limited supply, with critical levels in Nippes at 87.5 percent, the North-East at 84.6 percent, the South-East at 64.7 percent and the North at 60 percent. Salt was short in the Artibonite and Nippes, eggs in Nippes and the South-East, and spaghetti in the Centre and North-East. The South-East shows elevated unavailability across nearly every surveyed product.

On inflation, the consumer price index rose from 590.6 in March to 610.5 in April, a monthly acceleration to 3.4 percent from 0.8 percent, which the bulletin attributes to high petroleum prices and global disruption. Year-on-year inflation was 21.0 percent against 20.6 percent, elevated but stable.
