Solid Waste Management in Haiti: An Exploratory Analysis
Summary: An exploratory analysis of solid waste management in Haiti by Mickens Mathieu Pierre, Faubert Lubin and Antoine Pierre for the UNDP Haiti Accelerator Lab, 2022. It sets out the state of the sector and where intervention might work.
Key Findings
- Puts waste generation at 0.6 kg per person per day, which across a population of 11 million is 6,600 tonnes generated nationally every day.
- Records a collection rate of 12 percent on World Bank estimates, so about 5,808 tonnes accumulate on the ground each day.
- Treats the gap between generation and collection as the sector's defining number rather than reporting capacity or budget alone.
- An exploratory analysis from the UNDP Haiti Accelerator Lab, so it maps the problem rather than costing a solution.
Full Description
Solid waste is thinly documented in Haiti relative to its weight in urban public health and municipal finance, which is what gives this study its value: it is one of the few recent attempts to describe the sector as a whole rather than a single city or project. Being an Accelerator Lab product it is exploratory by design and says so, so it is a starting point for framing rather than a source of settled figures.
