Baseline Ecological Inventory for the Baradères-Cayemites Complex, Southwest Peninsula
- Covers a complex of 438 square kilometers of land, 43,800 hectares, and 447 square kilometers of marine area, 44,700 hectares.
- The marine zone extends to 791 square kilometers in total, of which 278 square kilometers are shallow water under 30 meters.
- Mangroves along the coast total 19 square kilometers, about 7 percent of the marine area, and red mangrove is the type found at 96 percent of sampled sites.
- Terrestrial cover is 42 percent mixed hardwood forest at 18.3 square kilometers, about 35 percent pasture and open ground at 15.4 square kilometers, 14 percent dry forest at 6 square kilometers and 4 percent unvegetated dry zones at 1.6 square kilometers.
- Wetlands occupy only 0.2 square kilometers, 0.5 percent of the landscape, a consequence of the dry climate.
Published by The Nature Conservancy in December 2020 and edited by Virginie Destuynder and Maxène Atis, this baseline ecological inventory of the Baradères-Cayemites complex is credited to a team of fourteen authors led by S. Schill. At 237 pages it is the most substantial environmental baseline in this batch. It completes a three-document sequence the corpus now holds for the same complex: this ecological baseline of 2020, the EbA socio-economic diagnosis of 2018, and the mangrove restoration plan of 2024 - the natural system, the human system, and the intervention. Note that despite its filename it is an ecological inventory rather than a project evaluation.
