Promising Agricultural Value Chains in the Nippes Region: Phase III - The Ten Most Promising Chains
- Builds the rice case on an integrated mill rather than on production alone: an investment of 168,192 US dollars with first-year sales forecast at 674,000 dollars, subject to further study.
- Sets the milling performance that makes the investment work, 70 percent white rice, a broken-grain rate under 5 percent and rice bran kept unmixed with husk, and identifies the losses avoided as dead losses rather than inefficiencies.
- Values the by-products as products: from 1,600 hectares over two seasons at 3,568 kg a hectare, giving 5,696 tonnes of paddy, the mill would yield 3,987 tonnes of hulled rice (70 percent), 569 tonnes of bran to sell to pig farmers (10 percent) and 1,138 tonnes of husk (20 percent) for biochar as organic fertilizer.
- Prices the biochar line explicitly, with revenue from 700 tonnes at 44 US dollars a tonne, so the waste stream carries its own business case.
- Proposes the intensive rice system, seedlings transplanted from nursery under 15 days old, single plants at 25 by 25 cm spacing and watering without flooding, as the yield route in irrigated zones.
- Ties the mill to demand that already exists, with the organizational side taken on by a network experienced in supplying school canteens in the Nippes, and contracting proposed with quality requirements and incentive prices.
- Specifies the animal feed formulation from local materials, rice bran, wheat bran and milled leaves of Tithonia diversifolia, Moringa oleifera, cassava, sweet potato and Leucaena, with premix to complete the protein supply.
Produced for MARNDR under tender MARNDR/TPR/SFQC-02/20 as part of a study to identify promising agricultural value chains in the Nippes region and formulate measures to improve their performance for activities to be financed through the TPR project. This Phase III report, dated 5 November 2021, sets out the ten most promising chains together with good practices and proposed incentives. It is the operative output of the study, and it complements the earlier Nippes material in this collection - the MARNDR-IFAD agro-economic baseline of 2010 and the Ministry of the Environment's environmental diagnosis of 2008 - by moving from description to selection.
