Bulletin of the ISPAN, No. 20: The Marché Hyppolite Rises from Its Ashes
Summary: The iron market at the finishing stage of its restoration, treated as a place people never stopped using: the towers the eye never doubted, the iron and cast iron under the hand, the noise of continuing life after sundown.
Key Findings
- The bulletin presents the restored Marche Hyppolite as a visible link between pre-earthquake and post-earthquake Port-au-Prince, after the 29 May 2008 fire destroyed the north hall and the 12 January 2010 earthquake damaged the central pavilion.
- The market is described as built for a city of barely 70,000 inhabitants and selected for the 1000-gourde note issued in 1999 for the 250th anniversary of Port-au-Prince.
- The restoration project was financed by a private Digicel donation, used John McAslan + Partners for technical studies, and began work on 22 February 2010.
- ISPAN's restoration approach retained the volume, order and vocabulary of the building for the rebuilt north hall while restoring the south hall with recovered metal pieces from the destroyed north hall.
- The restoration cost is cited at about ten million US dollars, plus G 2,567,500.00.
- ISPAN completed a full architectural survey and condition assessment of Jacmel's Marche-en-Fer from 1 to 5 December 2010, following a 14 September 2010 agreement between Jacmel municipality and the Digicel Foundation.
