Mangrove Restoration Plan for the Baradères-Cayemites Marine Protected Area
- IEDIH prepared a mangrove restoration plan for the Baradères-Cayemites protected marine area with support from the Haitian Biodiversity Fund.
- The plan combines an ecosystem diagnosis, threat assessment, stakeholder engagement, field observations, sampling and restoration methods.
- The Baradères-Cayemites complex is presented as one of Haiti's main biodiversity zones, with terrestrial and marine protected-area components.
- Major threats include overfishing, charcoal production and wood extraction, agriculture and livestock impacts, land-based pollution, mining and quarries, climate change, disasters, droughts and floods.
- The plan proposes restoration zones, mitigation strategies, seedling and mangrove-species guidance, monitoring and adaptive management.
- The conclusion frames mangrove restoration as biodiversity protection, coastal-erosion protection, marine ecosystem regulation and a source of socio-economic opportunities such as ecotourism and sustainable fishing.
Prepared by the Initiative pour un Environnement et le Développement Intégré en Haïti for the Fonds Haïtien pour la Biodiversité over the period October 2023 to May 2024, and reviewed by CECI. Its technical support is credited to Gregg Moore, associate professor of coastal restoration and resilience at the University of New Hampshire's Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, and to Jean Michel Lacour, a doctoral candidate in environmental science. It is among the most recent documents in this batch and the corpus's only mangrove restoration plan; it complements the EbA socio-economic diagnosis of the same Baradères-Cayemites complex from 2018, which covered the human system that the mangroves sit within.
