Inventory and Description of the Agro-Ecological Zones of Savane Diane
- The study was commissioned by the École Moyenne de Développement de Hinche and carried out by the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of the State University of Haiti.
- The methodology combined prospecting of the area, landscape study, soil study, interviews with actors, and work organization.
- Savane Diane is described as having an average annual temperature around 30°C and a rainy season lasting 6 months.
- The floristic inventory reports 43 plant families, with Poaceae representing 14.5% of species, Euphorbiaceae 8.5%, Mimosaceae 6.8%, Caesalpiniaceae 5%, and Fabaceae 5%.
- The document states that 80% of species are confined to vegetation islands in depressions and riverbanks that cover only a small share of the study area.
- The inventory identifies seven agro-ecological zones, including a non-cultivated and non-grazed prairie zone that alone covers more than 40% of Savane Diane, or 5,015 hectares.
- The soil-unit summary describes alluvial, hydromorphic, calcimagnesian, fersiallitic red, and stony alluvial soils, with fertility varying from low to medium.
Carried out by the Faculté d'Agronomie et de Médecine Vétérinaire for the École Moyenne de Développement de Hinche and dated June 2003, this study inventories and describes the agro-ecological zones of Savane Diane. Its terms of reference are stated plainly: accelerating degradation of the country's natural resources demands a high level of rationality in their use, which requires relatively detailed knowledge of what those resources can support; Savane Diane is in part exploited anarchically and in places under-exploited; and given population growth and the pressing need to enlarge the cultivated area, it becomes opportune to diagnose under-used regions.
