Socio-Economic Diagnosis of the Baradères-Cayemites Complex (EbA Mountain-to-Sea)
- The May 2018 preliminary report is a socioeconomic diagnosis for the Baradères-Cayemites mountain-to-sea EbA complex in Nippes and Grand'Anse.
- It was commissioned by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment under a project to improve ecosystem and community resilience to climate change and anthropogenic threats.
- The participatory diagnosis is intended to inform a complex development plan, identify promising value chains, monitor socioeconomic indicators and reduce vulnerability while conserving biodiversity.
- Household and farm data show aging farm heads, substantial migration, limited sanitation, no household electricity access, direct land tenure for most farmers, steep erosion-prone plots and drought as a major production constraint.
- Livestock is dominated by goats, cattle, sheep and poultry, with tethering and free grazing creating pressure on already denuded watersheds.
- Fishing remains highly artisanal despite about 4,000 fishers and 2,884 vessels, while income sources are led by crop production, petty trade, livestock and fishing.
Commissioned by UNDP and the Ministry of the Environment under the project to improve the resilience of ecosystems and vulnerable communities to climate change, and conducted by GRAPES in May 2018, this is the socio-economic diagnosis of Complex 2, Baradères-Cayemites, in the country's southwest peninsula spanning the Nippes and Grand'Anse departments. The preliminary report presents four products together: the socio-economic diagnosis of the watersheds and coastal basins, a document on promising value chains, a monitoring plan for socio-economic indicators, and a socio-economic development plan. It is the socio-economic counterpart to the mangrove restoration plan for the Baradères-Cayemites marine protected area also held here.
