Full Description

The volume belongs to CLACSO's collection of anthologies of Latin American and Caribbean social thought and was sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The coordinators' introductory essay presents the selection as a response to a reductionist view that places Haiti outside contemporary society, and links the critical character of Haitian thought to the Haitian Revolution. The essay does not claim to be exhaustive.

The chapters cover historiography (Trouillot on the Haitian Revolution as a non-event; Manigat on the itinerary of Haitian history), political economy and the state (Castor on the neocolonial apparatus; Pierre-Charles on fascist oppression for dependent development and on economic tutelage; Moïse and Ollivier on a heavy inheritance), culture and religion (Casimir on oppressed culture; Depestre on negritude; Hurbon on the religious), women's work (Neptune Anglade on domestic and commercial production), the environment (Bellande on eighty years of reforestation and erosion control), and literature and art (Dominique, Jacques Stephen Alexis's 1956 prolegomena on marvelous realism, and Danticat on the migrant artist). It closes with notes on the authors and the coordinators.
