The Waterfront of Les Cayes

The Waterfront of Les Cayes

Summary — Rose-May Guignard of the CIAT on the waterfront of Les Cayes, presented at the September 2015 national workshop on Haiti's coastline and its land, economic and environmental stakes. It treats the seafront of a departmental capital as an urban planning object rather than as a coastal one.
Key Findings
Full Description

Les Cayes is the capital of the Sud department and one of the Haitian cities whose form is set by its relationship to the sea. This CIAT presentation, given at the Marriott in Port-au-Prince on 8 September 2015 to the national workshop 'le littoral en Haïti: enjeux fonciers et économiques, menaces environnementales', looks at the city's waterfront specifically. The framing of the workshop matters for reading it: the coast is treated as a place where land tenure, economic use and environmental threat meet, so a seafront is not only an ecological edge but a contested property and a piece of urban fabric. Rose-May Guignard was the CIAT's urban planning lead, and this belongs with the institution's city-scale work rather than with its coastal-management material. It is one of about a dozen papers from that single workshop preserved in the archive.
