Bibliographic Review and Update on the Poultry and Seed Value Chains in Haiti
- The August 2011 CECI review covers poultry and seed information, with detailed seed-chain sections on banana, bean, cassava and yam.
- Plantain production was estimated at 200,000 metric tons in 2008, down nearly 30 percent from the late 1990s to 2008, although a FAO-WFP mission later estimated more than 300,000 tons for 2009 and 2010.
- The national banana market had consumed more than 500,000 tons in the 1980s, while current availability met about half of demand.
- Haiti imported 5,000 to 20,000 tons of plantain per year from the Dominican Republic.
- National annual banana-plant needs were estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture at 250 million plants.
- Black Sigatoka prevalence was described as near 100 percent in farms, with real banana yields down by more than 50 percent and agricultural income down by more than 80 percent depending on farm category.
- The bean market was estimated at 90,000 to 100,000 metric tons per year, with 22 to 25 percent imported annually and 13 million dollars in foreign-exchange outflows.
Prepared for the Centre d'Étude et de Coopération Internationale by Jean Chesnel Jean and Roosevelt Saint-Dic and dated August 2011, this report is a bibliographic review and information update covering two chains together: poultry and seed. Its treatment of seed runs across banana, bean, yam and cassava planting material. Because it is explicitly a review of existing literature rather than new fieldwork, it doubles as a bibliography of what had been written on these chains up to 2011, which makes it a useful entry point to the earlier grey literature. The same two consultants appear separately elsewhere in this collection - Chesnel on the UNEP southern chains study and Saint-Dic on the Belladère agro-economic diagnosis - so the report also marks the start of a documented working relationship.
