Characterisation of the Coffee Value Chain in Haiti
- The study estimates Haiti's 2006 coffee production at 350,000 bags of 60 kg, less than 0.28 percent of world production.
- More than 65 percent of coffee-growing families have less than 2 hectares, and the typica variety accounts for 90 percent of Haitian coffee trees.
- National consumption is estimated at 64.26 percent of production, official exports at 7.13 percent and the Dominican Republic market at 28.39 percent.
- Official coffee export receipts fell from 25.3 million US dollars in 1995 to 4.684801 million US dollars in 2006.
- The report argues that without an applicable national coffee policy, Haiti risks leaving the group of coffee-producing countries within 50 years.
Produced by the Association Nationale des Agro-Professionnels Haïtiens with European Commission funding and dated September 2007, this report characterizes the Haitian coffee chain as it then stood. Its preamble is explicit about method: rather than treating one segment, it attempts to present the chain in full, accounting for the whole set of actors and the macroeconomic framework within which they operate, and its proposals are framed to cover every category of participant in the coffee sector - producers, producer organizations, and the intermediaries and processors that follow them. Because it predates the INCAH diagnostic update of 2014 and the national coffee recovery plan of 2015 by several years, it is the baseline against which the deterioration those later documents record can be measured.
