Restoring health delivery capacity and reducing risks of cholera outbreaks

Published title: Health Response to Hurricane Matthew: Restoring health delivery capacity and reducing risks of cholera outbreaks

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Description

The project aims to reinforce health delivery capacity and cholera prevention in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, which is compounded by the effects of the rainy season. Heavy and frequent rains throughout most of the country create a very high risk of propagating water-borne (cholera in particular, but also hepatitis) or vector-borne diseases (particularly mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, which is at higher prevalence in Grand Anse than elsewhere in the country) that could affect thousands of families and children already at risk. Overcrowding and migrant displaced populations can facilitate speed of disease spread within this area and spread it to other parts of the country. The project will directly benefit 351,000 people.
