Green reintegration of migrants through reforestation and agroecology

Published title: Promote the ‘Green Reintegration’ of Migrants Returning to Haiti through Innovative Reforestation and Agroecology Initiatives

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Description

Haiti is one of the countries most affected by disasters due to environmental risks due to its geographic situation and its high vulnerability indices. The country is also experiencing a very high rate of deforestation resulting in a major loss of rural areas in Haiti. In addition, Haiti is also experiencing high levels of illegal migration and migrant trafficking. This project aims to provide employment opportunities in the field of reforestation in areas with the highest number of forcibly returned migrants, allowing the reuse of agricultural land and thus offering more economic opportunities locally, reducing the need to migrate to meet their needs in 'return' and also 'denature/origin' zones. The project also includes a major research strand on the links

between climate change. migration and deforestation. These activities will be conducted in cooperation with partners such as the National Bureau for Migration (ONM). FAO and UNEP. As part of the project, an awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness of sustainable natural resource management practices will be carried out.
