Addressing the humanitarian and protection needs of displaced populations

Published title: Adopting a Comprehensive Approach to Addressing the Critical Humanitarian and Protection Needs of Displaced Populations in Haiti

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Description

The prolonged economic downturn in Haiti heightened social tensions, and civil unrest, exacerbated by rampant gang violence in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and more recently in the Centre and Artibonite Departments. This has led to a protracted humanitarian crisis, characterized by severe threats to the safety, well-being, and basic human rights of Haitians. As a result, many Haitians are forced to flee to other regions of the country and abroad, often resorting to unsafe and irregular migration routes and resulting in massive and sometimes unlawful deportations of Haitian migrants by neighboring countries. This project aims to address the humanitarian consequences of the complex crises unfolding in the country by achieving the following results, 1) Strengthening emergency and protection services

for Haitian returnees, 2) Improving health care and mental health and psychological support services for IDPS, 3) Ensuring access to basic, safe and dignified shelters to affected populations, 4) Enhancing capacities of stakeholders to coordinate and address the needs of vulnerable people on-the-move in Haiti, 5) Provision of timely and dignified access to water, sanitation and hygiene services, and 6) Strengthening disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction management capacities of key national institutions.
