WFP VAM Market Monitoring, March to April 2025: Haiti

The World Food Programme's Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping unit publishes this market monitoring bulletin for Haiti. This edition covers March and April 2025.

The cost of the national food basket rose 3 percent over the two months, from 25,598 gourdes for a family of five in March to 26,387 in April. Measured against April 2024 the level was 10 percent lower, which the bulletin attributes to better availability after the third maize and rice harvest. At departmental level the sharpest monthly increases were in the South, at 28,089 gourdes, up 11 percent, and the Centre, at 28,199 gourdes, up 5 percent. The Port-au-Prince metropolitan basket moved the other way, down 1 percent from 26,234 to 25,848 gourdes.

Among commodities, wheat flour rose 13 percent and vegetable oil 18 percent between March and April; most other items were stable. Food commodities were generally available, maize and rice in particular, while black and red beans remained limited.

On market operation, retailers reported an average of 13 days of stock, with higher levels in the North, the South and the Centre. About 45 percent of retailers nonetheless reported a stockout, citing lack of cash, transport difficulties caused by gang activity on supply routes, and heavy demand from some local suppliers.

The bulletin also reports the national market functionality analysis assessed across nine dimensions at the end of 2024: five dimensions scored well, namely product availability, assortment, accessibility, market resilience and competition, and four scored low, namely price volatility, product quality, services and infrastructure. The Grand'Anse, the South and the West were identified as the most critical departments.
