Census of the Microfinance Industry in Haiti
- Values the microcredit market at 7.04 billion gourdes in gross portfolio, of which 1.98 billion sits with the caisses populaires.
- Puts deposits circulating in the sector at 3.96 billion gourdes.
- Finds the caisses populaires control 60.82 percent of deposits and 60.99 percent of depositors, 2.4 billion gourdes across 642,292 depositors.
- Works out average deposits per depositor at 3,750 gourdes, which is the figure that shows what kind of saver the sector actually serves.
- A census rather than a sample, covering 2010-2011 and published September 2012 for USAID's HIFIVE project.
Prepared by Lhermite François of SMG for the USAID/HIFIVE project and published in September 2012, this is a census rather than a sample survey of Haiti's microfinance institutions for the 2010-2011 year. It opens with a panorama of the Haitian microfinance sector and a review of the comparable earlier exercise, then sets out its research approach and sampling method before presenting the collected data. The analysis covers institutional characteristics - staff size, network size and coverage, average age of institutions, and balance-sheet size - followed by the extent and reach of lending operations, beginning with borrower numbers. Because it is a census of the industry at a fixed date shortly after the 2010 earthquake, it is a useful benchmark for measuring how the sector's structure has since changed.
