Retrospective Study of Haitian Diaspora Remittances: Prospects for Remobilisation towards Financing Sustainable Development
- Reads remittances as a financing source alongside the others, tracking annual transfers as a share of GDP against credit to the private sector and the banks' liquid reserve ratio.
- Establishes the seasonality of monthly transfers over 2012 to 2020, which is what distinguishes a remittance flow from an aid flow for macroeconomic purposes.
- Examines the effect of BRH circular 114-2 on foreign-currency deposits, so the study covers the regulatory channel and not only the inflow.
- Written by Raulin L. Cadet of Universite Quisqueya and published by UNDP under a CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO license, which makes it reusable.
Remittances are close to a fifth of Haitian GDP, which makes the question this study asks a first-order one for development financing. The author is an academic economist and the treatment is analytical rather than promotional, which distinguishes it from most published material on the diaspora. Read with the BRH work on unrequited transfers for the measurement side and with the 2023 development finance assessment for where remittances sit among other financing flows.
