Systematic human rights violations in Haiti: the RNDDH presses the state to acknowledge the gravity of the situation
- The state told the Universal Periodic Review on 31 January 2022 that four years of effort had improved human rights in Haiti.
- The network, which co-authored an alternative report to the Council, answers that since 2018 the population has lived in a denial of its rights.
- It asks that state authorities in collusion with armed groups be unmasked, tried and convicted.
- It asks that police officers be certified before they are equipped, and that the judicial personnel be certified as a whole.
The Human Rights Council held the fortieth session of its Universal Periodic Review from 24 January to 4 February 2022, examining twelve countries including Haiti, and at Haiti's session on 31 January the state said that efforts over the previous four years had gone to the respect, protection and realisation of human rights. The network took part with the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux, the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and Chans Altènativ in an alternative report submitted to the Council, followed the session, and answers it here with facts showing that since 2018 the population has lived in a state of denial of its rights.
Its position is that the state should instead acknowledge that the situation is extremely grave and take immediate measures: unmask, try and convict every state authority in collusion with armed groups, retake the national territory that has escaped the security forces, stop the illegal entry of weapons and ammunition, certify police officers before equipping them, and certify the judicial personnel as a whole.
