Agro-Economic Diagnosis of the Commune of Lascahobas
- Sizes the commune at 45,873 inhabitants over 151.58 square kilometers, a density of 302 per square kilometer, across three communal sections, Petit-Fond, Jumpas and Lahoye, with the town center in Petit-Fond.
- Finds the census and the survey disagree on occupation: IHSI puts 95 percent of the population in agriculture and 2.7 percent in commerce, while the study's own survey finds 28 percent with agriculture as their main activity, 43 percent studying and 9 percent in petty trade.
- Records holdings of respectable size for Haiti, averaging 1.34 carreaux (1.72 hectares), with more than 40 percent holding one or two parcels and 48 percent three or four, and large property rare.
- Reports direct owner operation on more than 70 percent of farmland, rental tenancy at 25 percent and sharecropping at 1 percent, with land disputes rare and recourse to the courts rarer still because notarial fees are prohibitive for heirs.
- Prices an eight-hour day of hired labor at 327 gourdes on average, from 297 gourdes in February to 364 in December, and finds 94 percent of farmers buy external labor, 79 percent of them regularly from land preparation to harvest.
- Finds bananas the highest-earning of the main crops and maize and pigeon pea the weakest, with beans relatively profitable but vulnerable to a few weeks of drought when rainfed.
- Notes livestock on 76 percent of holdings, averaging about 52,000 gourdes of animal assets, and 31 percent of surveyed farmers with an external source of financing in the previous twelve months.
Prepared by Roosevelt Saint-Dic for Groupe Trame SA and dated March 2020, this report is the second of the pair commissioned under the UNDP tender to produce communal development plans for Belladère and Lascahobas. It covers the realities of the commune of Lascahobas and treats the agro-economic component of that commune's development plan: production, processing and marketing. Like its Belladère counterpart it is an input to a PCD rather than the adopted plan itself. The corpus already holds the MENFP commune school map for Lascahobas, so the two sit together in the geography view.
