Development Study for the Onde Verte River Watershed, Commune of Belladère
- Characterizes the Onde Verte watershed by slope class, which is what determines where soil conservation work can pay: close to 20 percent of the watershed lies below 5 percent slope, about 37 percent between 5 and 12 percent, more than 35 percent between 12 and 30 percent, and 8 percent between 30 and 60 percent.
- Identifies the Roche Plate sub-basin as the harder case, with under 2 percent of its area below 5 percent slope, more than 42 percent between 12 and 30 percent and 20.64 percent between 30 and 60 percent, so erosion risk is graded high to severe there.
- Reports a drainage density of 0.096 km per square kilometer and a time of concentration of 4.53 hours, the two figures that govern how fast a storm reaches the valley floor.
- Finds the water balance already committed elsewhere: more than 99.6 percent of the total water volume goes to hydroelectric conversion at a plant built in the early 1980s, which constrains what irrigation the watershed can add.
- Sizes the population of the affected communal sections at about 137,346 inhabitants in some 29,820 households, roughly 79 percent rural, with Renthe Mathé the most populous at 47,441 and 43 percent of people under 18.
- Records mean annual rainfall above 1,300 mm across the watershed, rising to between 1,400 and 1,600 mm in the higher zones, against a potential evapotranspiration the study sets out alongside it.
- Notes 115 fundamental schools distributed across 94 percent of the watershed, and a supply system delivering 9 liters per second to a population of around 10,400.
Carried out by AGROCONSULT SA for MARNDR and the BON FED under the Programme d'Amélioration de la Sécurité Alimentaire en Haïti (PASAH), an MDG Initiative operation, and validated in September 2014. The document's own information page records the arrangement behind it: the project covers food security improvement in the Onde Verte river watershed in the commune of Belladère, Centre department; implementation was by Protos and the Service Œcuménique d'Entraide; and funding came from the European Union and the Directorate-General for Belgian Development Cooperation. At 181 pages it is the most detailed watershed study in this batch, and it places Onde Verte firmly in Belladère - a commune for which the corpus also holds an agro-economic diagnosis, a school map and a displacement situation analysis.
