Full Description

This report presents the provisional results of Haiti's General Agricultural Census (RGA), based on the 2008/2009 farm survey, for the Sud department, published by MARNDR in February 2012. It follows the census methodology and covers the main themes surveyed at the departmental level: agricultural holdings and holders, land structures and tenure arrangements, irrigation, land use and crops, livestock, labor, equipment, credit, extension, and constraints to development. Of the 1,053,107 agricultural holdings enumerated nationally, 92,868 were recorded in the Sud department, 8.8% of the country's total. These holdings span a Utilized Agricultural Area (SAU) of 60,463.4 carreaux, an average of 0.65 carreau per holding, and 98.4% are managed directly by their holders. The departmental livestock herd totals 452,287 head, dominated by goats, followed by pigs and cattle. Cereals were the leading land use in the department, with maize the most important cereal. The census was conducted by MARNDR with technical support from the FAO and financing from the European Union.
