Agricultural Value Chains and Fisheries in the Nippes Department
- Estimates mango exports at about 8,000 tonnes a year, more than 15 percent of estimated national production, from a single department.
- Records more than twenty varieties grown in the Nippes, with Labiche, Rond, Jèsné, Blanc, Canelle, Peau Fin and Léogâne as the main commercial ones, and a zone at the eastern edge of the department specialized in the Corne variety that is scarce elsewhere.
- Finds the Francisque variety recently established and concentrated in Petite Rivière, where grafting programmes extended it over fifteen years, with 20,000 trees grafted by the Agroforesterie-Nippes project alone.
- Identifies a market mismatch rather than a production shortfall: the varieties commonly produced are not those most in demand on the Port-au-Prince market, while the region's geography and economy sustain strong local demand for cheap, medium-quality fruit.
- Sizes market-day volumes concretely, from under a tonne at the smallest markets to 5 tonnes at the largest such as Mussotte or Carrefour Desruisseaux, so mango trade in the Nippes is mainly intra-departmental.
- Covers the fruit chains one by one, breadfruit, avocado, mango, citrus and banana, alongside crop and livestock systems, agricultural trade flows and fisheries, which makes it a baseline rather than a strategy.
Prepared by Alex Bellande in October 2010 as the baseline agro-economic study for the MARNDR-IFAD project in the Nippes. It works through the characteristics of the setting - settlement and administrative units, physical framework, and farm structures - then the modes of production, covering cropping systems and livestock systems, before turning to the trade in agricultural products. Treating fisheries alongside farming reflects the department's coastal geography. It is the economic companion to the environmental diagnosis of the Nippes produced for the Ministry of the Environment two years earlier, and to the PADELAN communal plans for Paillant and Petite Rivière des Nippes.
