Agricultural Development Policy 2010-2025
- More than half of Haiti's land has slopes steeper than 40 percent, and plains account for only a fifth of the surface.
- The area actually cultivated exceeds the area suitable for cultivation, so roughly 420,000 ha of marginal land is under crops.
- Soil erosion is estimated at about 12,000 ha a year, which makes the resource base itself the policy problem.
- The policy period is 2010-2025; citations giving 2010-2015 are wrong.
MARNDR's agricultural development policy covering 2010 to 2025, issued March 2011. It sets out the ministry's objectives for the sector after the earthquake, the instruments it intends to use and the institutional arrangements for delivery. Its diagnosis of the resource base is the part most often cited: Haiti is mountainous, the cultivated area already exceeds the area suitable for cultivation, and marginal land is under crops with heavy erosion as a result. Note the policy period is 2010-2025, not 2010-2015 as some citations give it.
