Impact of Coffee Interventions on Producer Incomes at Baptiste
- The May 2012 final report studies the impact of coffee interventions at Baptiste on producer income, including berry-borer control, regeneration and new planting.
- The study combines document review, preliminary and formal surveys, a producer typology and stratified sampling in agroecological stages II and III.
- It defines income and loss formulas for coffee, including gross coffee product, losses from borer-damaged cherries, coffee income, other-crop receipts, total income and coffee's share of total income.
- The sample is organized into three farm categories by coffee area, with coffee land increasing from category I to category III in both agroecological stages.
- Results show variable costs far above fixed costs, reflecting labor and operating expenses and weak capital investment in tools.
- A separate inquiry with 10 producers holding half-hectare regenerated plots found no loss from regeneration and reported increased production after regeneration.
This final report by resident agronomist Roger Charles, prepared for MARNDR's Programme de Développement Économique des Filières Rurales and dated May 2012, evaluates the impact on producer incomes of the interventions carried out on coffee in the Baptiste zone: control of the coffee berry borer, regeneration of existing stands, and new planting. Treating the three interventions together and measuring them against income rather than yield is what gives it analytical value - it asks whether the technical work reached producers' pockets. It sits between the 2011 baseline study and the 2014 adaptability study in the DEFI Baptiste sequence.
