Special Report on the Situation of Press Freedom in Haiti
- The Commission devoted a standalone country report to press freedom in Haiti, which it does rarely and which marks the situation as distinct from the general human rights picture in its 2022 country report.
- Impunity, not the violence alone, is the report's organising theme: cases are traced through to whether anything followed them.
- The report was written in Spanish and translated, so the Spanish edition is the authority where the two differ.
A special report from the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, issued in May 2025 under Special Rapporteur Pedro Vaca Villarreal as OEA/Ser.L/V/II, CIDH/RELE/INF.31/25.
The report takes press freedom in Haiti as its single subject at a point when armed groups control much of the capital and the institutions that would investigate crimes against journalists have largely stopped functioning. It documents the conditions under which Haitian journalists work, the killings, injuries and threats they have suffered, the displacement of newsrooms, and the impunity that follows each case.
It is catalogued by the OAS under freedom of expression, freedom of the press, crimes against journalists and human rights in Haiti, and carries ISBN 978-0-8270-7994-6. The Spanish edition is the original; an English edition is held here as the alternate.
