Monthly Inflation Note, May 2019
Summary: The Bank of the Republic of Haiti's monthly note on inflation for May 2019. It reads the consumer price index published by IHSI and adds the central bank's own analysis: headline inflation month on month and year on year, movement in the main consumption functions, inflation broken down by whether goods are imported or locally produced and by region of the country, core inflation, the factors the bank holds responsible for the month's movement, and its inflation forecast.
Key Findings
- Inflation moved in opposite directions in May 2019: annual inflation rose from 17.7 percent in April to 18 percent, while monthly inflation fell by 30 basis points to 1.4 percent.
- The monthly slowdown reflected weaker growth in several consumption functions, including alcoholic beverages, household goods, restaurants, food and communications.
- Food and non-alcoholic beverages contributed 59.38 percent of annual inflation and 61.43 percent of monthly inflation.
- Imported-product annual inflation rose to 19.6 percent, while local-product annual inflation rose to 17.2 percent.
- BRH linked the still-high monthly inflation rate to continuing gourde depreciation, with the exchange rate at 88.56 gourdes per US dollar.
