Full Description

This WFP VAM Bulletin covers March-April 2024. After slightly improving between October 2023 and January 2024, the share of households with insufficient food consumption rose steadily through the first quarter, reaching a peak 72 percent (8.55 million people) in March 2024. The cost of the household food basket rose 21 percent between January and mid-April 2024, coupled with declining availability of essential commodities, eroding purchasing power just as demand rose in anticipation of intensifying insecurity. After the Cash Working Group updated the Minimum Expenditure Basket in February 2024, a new affordability analysis estimated that nine in ten Haitians would be unable to afford essential needs within the next two months.

Escalating violence, mostly contained in Port-au-Prince, intensified through the first quarter, forcing tens of thousands to flee to other departments or to IDP sites. Rainfall during the December-March dry season was relatively close to average nationally but worsened in March, with most of the country showing deficits just as land preparation and planting for the main growing season began; forecasts pointed to wetter-than-average conditions over the following three months.
