- UNICEF activated a UN system-wide scale-up in response to the deterioration.
- The revised appeal rose to USD 245.9 million, up from USD 210.3 million in the base 2023 appeal.
- The revision targets 2.6 million people, including 1.7 million children.
This first revision of UNICEF's 2023 Humanitarian Action for Children appeal for Haiti reflects a humanitarian situation stemming from ongoing challenges and recurring crises fueled by prolonged political turmoil, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and escalating armed violence, which have led to chronic and acute humanitarian needs, including hunger, malnutrition, and gender-based violence that have reached unprecedented levels. Three million children need humanitarian and protection assistance, and UNICEF warns many more may fall into need if unattended or if new shocks hit the country.
In line with the UN system-wide scale-up activation, UNICEF is scaling up its response, providing support to the Government to ensure access to and continuity of basic services for the most vulnerable, while contributing to humanitarian-development-peacebuilding nexus strategies. UNICEF provides WASH, education, health, nutrition, child protection and social protection services, supports cholera rapid-response teams, and maintains work in disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness. UNICEF's revised request for 2023 rose to USD 245.9 million, up from USD 210.3 million in the base appeal, targeting 2.6 million people, including 1.7 million children, out of 5.2 million people in need.
