This edition of UNICEF's Humanitarian Action for Children appeal covers 2015, following a year in which cholera cases declined but remained a threat, with an outbreak persisting in the West Department. Haiti was also hit by a Chikungunya fever outbreak affecting 64,695 people, including 5,000 children under 5, and by November 2014 flooding in the North and Northwest that damaged crops. Almost 94 percent of people displaced by the 2010 earthquake had left displacement sites by October 2014, but 85,432 people remained in 123 camps in the Port-au-Prince area, with about 12,773 lacking access to appropriate toilets.
In 2014, with USD 22.2 million available against a USD 42.4 million appeal (52 percent funded), UNICEF supported the vaccination of 184,517 people against cholera, sensitized 363,267 people in affected areas, treated 7,145 children for severe acute malnutrition, and provided sanitation access to 106,446 camp residents. For 2015, UNICEF requests USD 22 million to sustain cholera surveillance and rapid response ahead of the June rainy season, continue vaccination campaigns targeting 313,000 people, treat 20,000 children for severe acute malnutrition, provide micronutrient supplementation to 600,000 children, retrofit 150 schools for disaster resilience, and extend support to the national water and sanitation directorate (DINEPA) as it takes over WASH sector coordination.
