The operational teaching program for the five core subjects of year 5 states that it replaces every earlier program in use in the country's schools. An opening section sets the aims of Haitian education, including universal schooling by 2004, and a timetable based on 30 school weeks a year. Each subject opens with a foreword and is organized by themes with general objectives, content, suggested activities and assessment items. Creole has seven themes, from oral communication to grammar, and is taught as the child's mother tongue. French covers oral communication, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar. Mathematics covers numeration, operations, geometry, measurement, problems, mental arithmetic and proportionality. Social sciences cover geography, the planets, civic rights and duties, the components of the Haitian state, history from 1804 to 1915, and culture. Experimental sciences cover the human body, natural elements, plants, animals and environmental conservation. Programs for arts, technology and physical education were to follow separately.
