This 122-page volume sets out the program by objectives for the five core subjects of year 4: Creole, French, mathematics, social sciences and experimental sciences. The foreword states it replaces every earlier program in use in the country's schools. An introduction sets the aims of Haitian education (free schooling, compulsory attendance, state guarantee of education) and targets universal schooling by 2004, the bicentenary. A study plan allocates teaching hours across 30 weeks a year for the first and second cycles. Each subject opens with a foreword and general objectives by theme, then a table of specific objectives, content, suggested activities and assessment. Creole is the language of instruction, on the grounds that teaching must happen in a language the child understands. Mathematics covers whole numbers below 10,000,000, the four operations, geometry, and measurement in units used in Haiti such as the aune, pied, gallon and livre. Programs for arts, technology and physical education were to follow separately.
