General Census of Agriculture: Agricultural Holders and Holdings
Summary: The holders-and-holdings fascicle of Haiti's 2008/2009 General Census of Agriculture, giving the national count of farms and their size distribution.
Key Findings
- Haitian agriculture is overwhelmingly smallholder: 73.9 percent of holders farm less than one carreau, and together they hold 46.7 percent of the cultivated area.
- Almost all holdings are managed directly by the holder rather than through a tenant or manager.
- Women hold a quarter of all holdings but a smaller share of the area, farming smaller plots on average.
Full Description
The holders-and-holdings volume of MARNDR's General Census of Agriculture (fieldwork 2008-2009). It reports the national number of agricultural holdings and holders, the area under cultivation, the distribution of holdings by size, and the sex and age of holders. The size distribution is the substantive finding: Haitian agriculture is overwhelmingly smallholder, and this volume is the source usually cited for that.
