Haiti: DIEM - Data in Emergencies Monitoring Brief, Round 3 (March 2023)
Summary: Third round of FAO's DIEM household survey in Haiti, drawing on data collected between 15 November and 24 December 2022. It finds large food consumption deficits, with over half of households consuming only one or two food groups in the previous day and female-headed households reporting larger deficits than male-headed ones. Grand'Anse and Nord-Ouest again had the worst dietary diversity and hunger scores; nearly half of households used emergency coping mechanisms and a third resorted to begging, while two-thirds of crop producers cited insufficient rainfall or irrigation as their main production constraint.
Key Findings
- The third-round DIEM monitoring brief found large food consumption deficits, with more than half of households eating only one or two food groups on the previous day.
- Grand'Anse and Nord-Ouest had the worst food-security outcomes for dietary diversity and hunger, and also reported assistance needs most often.
- Nearly half of households used emergency coping mechanisms, and coping strategies included begging, reducing health expenditure, stopping children's schooling and selling productive assets.
- More than two-thirds of crop producers reported production difficulties, mainly lack of rainfall or irrigation, and crop producers had worse food security than livestock producers or non-agricultural households.
- Livestock producers also reported widespread production difficulties, mainly disease or death and feed-purchase problems.
- FAO recommends immediate cash transfers or food distribution, agricultural inputs for the spring season, water-source investments, market-access infrastructure, veterinary care and feed access.
