Haiti: Shocks, Agricultural Livelihoods and Food Security - Monitoring Report, December 2021
- Households affected by shocks had a higher reduced coping strategy index than households not affected by shocks.
- Lower income was associated with more poor or borderline food consumption scores.
- Crop producers expected lower harvests than the previous year for several crops, especially cereals other than rice and maize.
- Large shares of cultivating households reported production difficulties linked to water, fertilizer and seed access.
- Commercialization difficulties included low prices, inaccessible markets, high marketing costs and weaker trader demand.
- Livestock keepers reported herd reductions and greater use of coping strategies when herds declined.
This FAO monitoring report examines shocks, agricultural livelihoods and food security in Haiti in 2021, using results from a FAO/WFP assessment conducted in July and August 2021 and published in December 2021. It analyzes household exposure to shocks, income changes, food consumption, coping strategies, crop production and commercialization, and livestock production. The sample covers 2,223 households across all ten departments through remote data collection by Geopoll. The report finds that households affected by shocks had higher reduced coping strategy scores, more frequent poor or borderline food consumption, and greater use of livelihood coping strategies such as spending savings, eating seeds, buying food on credit, borrowing food, selling animals and reducing health and education spending.
Crop producers reported lower cultivated areas or expected harvests for several crops, production difficulties linked to access to water, fertilizer and seeds, and commercialization problems such as low prices, inaccessible markets and high costs. Livestock keepers reported herd reductions, production difficulties, animal-feed constraints and heavier reliance on coping strategies. The conclusion links economic shocks, agricultural input access problems and animal-feed access to lower incomes and pressure on agricultural livelihoods.
