Plant Health Diagnosis of Avocado, Citrus and Banana at Baptiste
- The October 2009 diagnosis examines phytosanitary problems affecting avocado, citrus and banana or plantain systems at Baptiste under the DEFI program.
- Methods include farmer surveys in several Baptiste localities, field prospecting, macroscopic and microscopic examination, soil and root sampling, nematode extraction and laboratory identification.
- For citrus, the report identifies problems including Phytophthora gummosis, greasy spot, citrus dieback, melanose, scab, aphids, fumagine and Papilio demoleus defoliation.
- For avocado, it documents dieback, root rots, avocado bug, cercospora, anthracnose and scab.
- For banana and plantain, it identifies black Sigatoka, streak mosaic, Fusarium, bacterial problems, nematodes, black weevil, pseudostem weevil, red mite and black aphid.
- The conclusion says severe biological attacks are reducing citrus, avocado and banana productivity, with fungi killing many citrus and avocado trees and black Sigatoka reducing banana yield and vegetative cycle.
Carried out for MARNDR's Programme de Développement Économique des Filières Rurales under IDB loan 1794/SF-HA and dated October 2009, this diagnosis covers the health of avocado, citrus and banana stands at Baptiste. It is credited to the Direction de Protection des Végétaux and to a named team of agronomists: Pierre Guito Laurore, Jean-Frisner Clerveus, Philippe Emmanuel Patrice Charles and Jorge Montero. Alongside the three borer studies it makes Baptiste the most intensively surveyed small locality in this collection for plant health, and it is the earliest of the four DEFI documents held for the zone.
