Monthly Inflation Note, January 2015
Summary: The Bank of the Republic of Haiti's monthly note on inflation for January 2015. It reads the consumer price index published by IHSI and adds the central bank's own analysis: headline inflation month on month and year on year, movement in the main consumption functions, inflation broken down by whether goods are imported or locally produced and by region of the country, core inflation, the factors the bank holds responsible for the month's movement, and its inflation forecast.
Key Findings
- Annual inflation reached 6.6 percent in January 2015, 20 basis points above December 2014, while monthly inflation slowed to 0.4 percent.
- The monthly slowdown came mainly from food, beverages and tobacco and from rent, energy and water, whose combined contribution to monthly inflation fell to 57.40 percent.
- Imported-product inflation was 5.7 percent year-on-year with 0.4 percent monthly growth, while local-product inflation was 6.3 percent year-on-year with 0.40 percent monthly growth.
- Core inflation was 6.44 percent year-on-year and 0.38 percent month-on-month, slightly below the headline annual and monthly rates.
- The note links the slowdown to better food availability from sorghum and pigeon pea harvests, weaker post-holiday demand, and a fading effect from October 2014 fuel price increases.
