JSDF Grant for Emergency Community Cash for Work Project

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Objective

The grant is to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis on vulnerable Haitian families by creating opportunities for the poor and vulnerable to earn an income to meet their basic and urgent needs, while rehabilitating basic infrastructure and services in the community. This will be achieved through a cash for work program in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince where the largest number of poor and vulnerable people live (around 1.2 million) and in a few key areas such as Gonaives and St Marc where another 500,000 displaced persons have been housed temporarily. The Centre for National Coordination on Food Security, CNSA, and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network reported that as a consequence of the food, fuel, and financial crises, 2.8 million Haitians were food insecure in 2008. Their precarious situation has been aggravated recently by the January earthquake.
