Description
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant and growing threat to global public health. In 2019, an estimated 1.27 to 4.95 million deaths were attributed to bacterial AMR. The Caribbean region alone accounted for between 7,627 and 30,688 of these deaths. Recent initiatives by regional Caribbean organizations have aimed to address AMR by strengthening microbiological diagnostics, enhancing surveillance systems, reviewing national action plans, coordinating regional AMR control efforts and conducting situational analyses of AMR risks in the food and agriculture sectors. However, data on the AMR burden and risk in the Caribbean is limited, and evidence from published literature is sparse, particularly from the region's lower-middle-income countries. Designing and implementing context-specific research, training and public health interventions for AMR requires better

data, including gender-disaggregated data on its drivers, and understanding how climate change influences AMR transmission. Taking stock of research, interventions and policy frameworks is an important first step to building an integrated approach to reduce the AMR burden and monitor antimicrobial use across sectors, ensuring effective responses to this pressing public health issue. This project supports two scoping studies: an assessment of the AMR science research and ecosystem in the Caribbean, and an assessment of the policy and regulatory frameworks for AMR in the Caribbean. These scoping studies will identify research and policy gaps that need to be addressed to tackle AMR and highlight priority areas for developing an evidence-based research agenda on AMR for the region.
