Supporting Future University Educators

Published title: Supporting Future University Educators in Haiti

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Description

University education in Haiti faces several problems that severely limit the contribution that universities make to individual students and to national development. This project will address those weaknesses by strengthening Haitian universities' capacity to teach science and technology. More specifically, it will provide funding to the Institut des sciences, des technologies et des études avancées d'Haïti (ISTEAH to: -train high-quality university teaching and research staff in the field of science and technology across Haiti; -produce applied science-based research on priority social and economic issues; and, -build a network linking Haitian science and technology academics and education professionals with others working in this field internationally. Through this funding, the project team will address key gaps in the Haitian higher education system.

more

These include: -the weak quality and quantity of teaching staff in public and private universities; -the absence of standards, which has led to poorly designed courses; -old and out-of-date course content, which does not include the latest developments in science and technology; and, -the shortage of well-qualified faculty. Long-term impact of 2010 earthquake Haiti lacks a critical mass of trained professionals to lead its universities in science and technology. While this has always been a major problem, it was exacerbated when so many academics and students were killed in the 2010 earthquake. Less than 10% of Haiti's 1,000 professors have a Master's degree. An even smaller number have PhDs. Many only teach part-time. A group of concerned academics from Haiti, Canada, the US, and France established ISTEAH to address the problem. ISTEAH's long-term goal is to train 1,000 professionals in the field of science and technology to help address Haiti's many pressing needs. It will offer courses leading to a diploma in education, and master's and doctoral-level degrees. The courses will be taught using a combination of face-to-face, video, and online delivery. Students will be able to take courses in three locations: Port-au-Prince, Limonade, and Jacmel. Master's and doctoral students will be expected to do field research and take part in community service. IDRC's support will provide a small number of scholarships to students. It will also fund distance education infrastructure. The Groupe de Réflexion et d'Action pour une Haïti Nouvelle (GRAHN-Monde), based in Laval, Quebec, will manage the project.
