Acute support to IDPs

Published title: Acute support to IDPs in Haiti

US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.

Description

The current crisis in Haiti, particularly in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, is characterized by widespread insecurity, displacement, and growing humanitarian needs driven by escalating gang violence and political instability. With the escalation of violence in recent months, gangs have gained significant control over key neighbourhoods in Port-au-Prince, severely disrupting public order and limiting access to essential services such as healthcare, education, food and water. Violent clashes between rival gangs and law enforcement, along with frequent kidnappings, extortion, and roadblocks, have created a climate of fear, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes and seek safety in makeshift camps or overcrowded shelters, often set up in schools, and government buildings. In addition to the violence, chronic poverty and limited state

governance exacerbate the crisis. Many displaced people now live in unsafe, unhygienic conditions, lacking adequate food, clean water, sanitation, and medical care. The disruption of economic activities due to blockades and insecurity has further harmed livelihoods, leaving vulnerable populations without reliable sources of income. Women and children, who represent a large portion of the displaced, face heightened risks of exploitation, malnutrition, and inadequate healthcare, making them especially vulnerable to the ongoing crisis. Humanitarian access remains challenging, with aid organizations facing restricted movement due to the threat of gang attacks. Despite these obstacles, addressing urgent needs through cash assistance, WASH services, and community support is critical to providing relief and stability to those affected within Port-au-Prince’s metropolitan area.
