Community resilience to migration- and environment-related conflicts
Published title: Community Resilience to Migration- and Environment-Related Conflicts in the North-East of Haiti
US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.
Description
This project tackles the intersecting challenges of mass deportations, environmental degradation, and inter-community tensions in Haiti’s northeastern border zone, where vulnerable groups—repatriated migrants, charcoal producers, and sand/gravel extractors—face heightened risks. Its goal is to reduce conflict drivers and promote sustainable peace, equity, and resilience. The project focuses on two main objectives: 1. Social Cohesion and Peacebuilding: 120 local actors will be trained in conflict resolution and migration dynamics. Three permanent dialogue platforms will be established, one per commune, to institutionalize community-led mediation. The SJM-Haïti shelter center will be rehabilitated to host 850 vulnerable migrants with dignity and essential services. 2. Environmental and Economic Resilience: 110 individuals, including women and youth, will receive training in sustainable resource management. Three reforested plots

(1,000 seedlings each) and cleanup campaigns will engage local committees. Twenty-one families will gain technical support and financial assistance to launch income-generating activities, while 30 participants will benefit from entrepreneurship training. The project targets 2,225 direct beneficiaries (1,557 males, 668 females) across age groups 18–59, including 30 people with disabilities, and indirectly reaches 6,675 community members. It prioritizes women’s empowerment and combines immediate humanitarian support with longer-term development and peacebuilding, providing an integrated response to migration and environmental challenges in one of Haiti’s most fragile regions.
