Harnessing urbanization for a resilient, inclusive and green recovery
Published title: Harnessing urbanization for a more resilient, inclusive and green recovery in French-speaking least developed countries.
US$ millions unless stated. Haitian fiscal year, October to September. FY2026-27 began October 1, 2026.
Description
French-speaking Least Developed Countries (LDCs), all but one of which are in Africa, are facing unprecedented urbanization rates and are strongly hit by the socio-economic consequences of the global crisis. They also have limited human and financial resources and skills to manage cities, particularly secondary cities, in a sustainable manner. In this context, there is an opportunity to better share knowledge and tools readily available to implement urban solutions adapted to the context of LDCs, in French, particularly in view of building resilient, inclusive, and greener urban spaces. This project responds to the needs of urban professionals in French-speaking LDCs to access capacity-building services and tools that are effective, innovative, and digitally available to reach a maximum number of beneficiaries.
more
It proposes an integrated approach to knowledge sharing and practical capacity-building with an innovative combination of in-person and virtual spaces, facilitating enhanced learning and exchange, also in support of the implementation of the United Nations System Development Cooperation Frameworks (CFs). The project puts a strong emphasis on the application of digital innovation to enhance the transfer and creation of practical knowledge, to urban professionals as well as students, who are the next generation of urbanists. It builds on the potential offered by new learning modalities, including through the "UN-Habitat Learn” online learning platform, a space for hosting different digital capacity-building tools. While harnessing the potential of innovative and scalable digital solutions, the project recognizes limitations especially in LDCs related to the digital divide, and proposes approaches to mitigate such issues, including blended and low-bandwidth solutions. The project aims to fast track the implementation of appropriate urban management tools and policy mechanisms in identified countries, strengthening the link between existing knowledge and tools, the priorities identified in the cooperation frameworks, and their application in the context of UN country programming. By doing so, the project aims to support the building of resilient, inclusive, and greener urban spaces in French-speaking LDCs, contributing to resilience building and post COVID-19 recovery efforts in these countries. By providing technical assistance to strengthen the urban priorities in cooperation frameworks, the project can help to ensure that recovery and resilience building efforts are aligned with the urban development goals of these countries.
