WFP VAM Market Monitoring, January 2025: Haiti

This WFP VAM Market Monitoring bulletin covers January 2025. The national average cost of the food basket rose 0.4 percent (about 113 gourdes) to 25,303 gourdes compared with December 2024, remaining 10 percent lower than a year earlier. In the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, the cost rose about 1 percent to 27,335 gourdes, still more than 2,000 gourdes above the national average. Centre (+8%), Artibonite (+7%), South-East (+6%) and Nippes (+5%) departments recorded the largest cost increases, while prices fell elsewhere.

Food prices were generally stable, with the exception of maize, which rose in almost all departments, including 50 percent in South-East, 40 percent in Centre, 25 percent in North-West and 22 percent in Nippes; rice also rose 33 percent in North-West and 5 percent in South. Food availability was generally good, though some traders experienced occasional difficulty replenishing supplies due to financial constraints, high demand and logistical problems; red beans rose 3 percent in price due to seasonal factors. In December 2024, a market functionality survey had confirmed a sharp 23 percent food-basket price increase in Grand'Anse compared with November. The survey drew on face-to-face interviews with 502 traders across 58 markets in all ten departments.
