WFP VAM Bulletin, Recap Quarter 2 2024: Food Security Analysis

This WFP VAM Bulletin recaps the second quarter of 2024. Insufficient food consumption hit 72.1 percent of households in April 2024, one of the highest rates since mid-2021 monitoring began and just below October 2023's peak of 72.4 percent, linked to the January Mariani roadblock and February-March gang assaults in Port-au-Prince, compounded by the Dominican Republic border closure since September 2023. The rate eased to 69.7 percent in May and 69.6 percent in June, about 8.28 million people nationally, with South (76%), West (74%) and North-East (74%) departments worst affected; South alone saw a 20-percentage-point jump in one month.

In the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, insufficient consumption fell from an 80 percent April peak to 73 percent (1.69 million people) by June, though Cite-Soleil remained worst hit at 92 percent, and Delmas worsened 14 percentage points in one month while Tabarre and Petion-Ville improved. The food basket's cost, which peaked at 33,898 HTG nationally (29,380 HTG in Port-au-Prince) in April due to security-related supply issues, fell 5 percent in May and 10 percent in June to 25,261 HTG, though South-East and North-East, bordering the Dominican Republic, still faced elevated costs (34,147 and 31,246 HTG respectively) due to ongoing border-reopening issues. The share of households using emergency or crisis coping strategies fell from two in three at its March peak to a lower share by June, in step with the food-security improvement.
